I am very disappointed in the Republican candidates who resort to using race as a divisor to win the election. The first statement about Blacks and welfare bothered me when the first candidate said something about a Black person’s willingness to accept welfare and not pull themselves up by their bootstraps. Today Newt made a statement about Blacks preferring a welfare check over a paycheck. Of course we know that both opinions are false. Newt even said that he’s ready to take on the NAACP in defense of his words.
There are many divisors that mean a lot more to the survival of the United States as a cohesive country than race. I’m sorry that some of the Republicans have chosen to take on President Obama not on the content of his character. January 15th is Martin Luther King Junior’s birthday. I have been hoping for a long time that race was becoming a less important thing in defining Americans as people as in Mr. King’s dream. I don’t say this because I too am Black. I think that a lot of other Americans who are not Black agree with me.
Before another person takes such a controversial position to focus the world on, please show your disappointment also. Politicians are bounded by public opinion and votes. Please choose wisely to make your voice and votes cause the candidates to focus on real problems and divisors that count and not on race.
